View/Download Festival Program (PDF) The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival is hosted by: Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge This year’s festival will offer over 100 events for all ages and abilities. Join us to celebrate the spring migration of Alaska’s shorebirds. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival welcomes: Keynote Speaker Ted Floyd Ted is the longtime Editor of Birding magazine, the award-winning flagship publication of the American Birding Association (ABA). He has written five bird books, including the Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America (Harper Collins) and How to Know the Birds (National Geographic), and he has three more on the way! The Homer Bookstore will be at his presentation with books! 2024 Schantz Scholar Adrianna Nelson Adrianna began bird watching at nine years old when she identified a Dark-eyed Junco in her yard. She was named the American Birding Association (ABA) 2020 Young Birder of the Year (age 14-18 division). Adrianna will be sharing all she’s learned while traveling the country and working in various ornithology, education, or conservation positions during her Festival Presentation: The Seabird Connection: Linking Local Birds to Global Conservation . THANK YOU to the Schantz Brothers Foundation for bringing Adrianna to our Festival! Festival Artist Torie Rhyan Torie created the unique Red-necked Phalarope artwork for this year’s festival. Autographed posters and other merchandise featuring Torie’s work will be available at the festival. See you in May! Birding connects us all. The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies , the Pratt Museum and Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve are key program partners and will offer education and fun activities throughout the festival targeted to a wide array of ages and skill levels. There are several tours each day and talks by knowledgeable birders and researchers. Kachemak Bay, located in Homer, Alaska, provides miles of shoreline and intertidal habitat for migrating birds. Kachemak Bay’s unique ecology, easy accessibility to beaches, and the scenic landscapes of Homer make this a prime location to experience this annual migration. Kachemak Bay is a site of International Significance in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network . During the 2023 Festival, these species were identified.
